UMC El Paso cuts ED boarding by half with dashboards

University Medical Center (UMC) El Paso halved emergency department boarding times after deploying operational dashboards as part of a length-of-stay initiative launched in March 2023. The region’s only Level 1 trauma and comprehensive stroke center built on a baseline review from October 2022–February 2023 and added targeted process changes, greater visibility into patient flow and interdisciplinary escalation protocols to accelerate admissions, discharges and transfers.

The case highlights how real-time analytics and clinician-facing dashboards can materially improve throughput without new beds, and points to opportunities for integrating predictive models and AI-driven capacity management to further reduce delays. Health systems adopting similar digital operations can use dashboards as a foundation for advanced machine learning and decision support to scale improvements across regional networks.
