Mount Sinai uses AI to enhance the speed of genomic testing

Mount Sinai Health System has begun deploying a cloud-native genomic platform developed with Sophia Genetics that applies artificial intelligence to accelerate pathology workflows and genomic testing. The system will aggregate global cancer insights and automate analysis to reduce turnaround times for tumor sequencing, integrating with existing laboratory pipelines across the NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center that treats more than 4,000 oncology patients annually. The collaboration, announced at the AACR meeting, emphasizes scalable, cloud-based inference to speed variant calling, report generation and clinical interpretation.

Faster genomic results could shorten time to targeted therapies and trial enrollment, improving clinical decision-making and operational efficiency in oncology care. Providers will still need clinical validation, robust data governance and seamless EHR integration to manage privacy, bias and regulatory risk. If implemented correctly, the AI-enabled platform could standardize interpretation across sites and expand access to precision oncology.
