HIMSSCast: Scaling AI in hospitals is harder than it looks

A HIMSSCast discussion and the HIMSS AI Landscape in APAC Healthcare 2026 report warn hospitals are stalling on AI not from lack of funding but because they haven’t built operational foundations to scale. Many organisations stay in pilot mode due to weak workflow integration, immature governance, limited clinician training and unclear generative AI policies. The report also flags gaps in data infrastructure, interoperability and change management that block clinical and administrative deployment.

Panelists urged practical steps to move pilots to production: create cross‑disciplinary teams, establish governance and safety frameworks, invest in data engineering and APIs, integrate AI into clinician workflows, and track clinical and operational outcomes. They highlighted vendor selection, procurement agility and clearer regulation as adoption enablers. The central message: models alone won’t deliver value—sustainable AI requires institutional change, workforce training and governance to protect patient safety and clinician trust.
