GP trainees tapped to co-design clinical AI

General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) has announced a partnership with Lyrebird Health to involve GP trainees in the co-design of clinical AI tools and the governance of their safe use in real-world practice. The collaboration will create a national working group to advise on the development, testing, deployment, and ongoing safety of AI in general practice, guiding how tools integrate with workflows and patient care. The independent GP trainee body represents about 22,000 members across Australia.

This approach aims to ensure frontline doctors in training shape AI adaptations from the outset, addressing safety, ethics, data governance, and bias mitigation. By centering trainees in design decisions, the program seeks to improve decision support, reduce clinician workflow burden, and build trust in AI-enabled care while aligning with professional standards and patient safety priorities.
