The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has boosted its Electronic Health Record Modernization program by $17 billion, extending Oracle Health’s federal EHR contract to as much as $27 billion over three years. The move deepens the government’s push to digitize and standardize veteran and service member health data.
The electronic health record system is designed to provide unified patient records across the military, veterans, and select federal agencies, including the Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Beyond interoperability, the investment foreshadows increased use of AI-enabled analytics and clinical decision support to streamline care delivery and improve safety across enterprise workflows. However, authorities will face governance, cybersecurity, and vendor accountability challenges as data flows expand.
