New Zealand’s government is allocating more than NZ$10 million (about US$5.75 million) to Lifeline, Youthline and Whakarongorau to strengthen mental health and addiction telehealth services. The package funds capacity to handle roughly 16,000 additional calls and interactions — a roughly 15% uplift — and expands Youthline’s existing capacity by 44%, bolstering national crisis and counseling helpline throughput.
Crucially, the funding will support deployment of an AI-enabled triage and referral tool across publicly funded mental health and addiction helplines, intended to streamline intake, prioritize high-risk callers and route users to appropriate services. Health IT leaders will need to address integration, clinical governance and data privacy as the tool scales; proponents say the move could improve access and efficiency of telehealth response nationally.
