Australia’s health safety regulator, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC), has been tasked with developing national safety and quality standards for virtual care, with publication expected by the end of 2027. The work aims to standardize telehealth, remote monitoring and digital clinical workflows across public and private providers, addressing patient safety, clinical governance, data protection and interoperability as virtual services expand.
For AI and health technology, the forthcoming standards will influence deployment of AI-enabled clinical decision support, remote diagnostic tools and algorithm-driven triage by setting expectations for validation, transparency, risk management and workforce training. Vendors and health services should prepare for clearer requirements on data governance, informed consent, monitoring and post-market performance to support safer adoption of AI in virtual care.
