Tsinghua University’s virtual hospital concept has entered early clinical deployment as eight Chinese hospitals pilot an AI-assisted outpatient consultation service. The virtual consult room integrates telemedicine workflows with hospital systems to support clinicians during face-to-face and remote visits, offering clinical decision support, automated documentation and pre-visit triage. Early trials aim to test interoperability, user experience and clinical safety before wider rollout.
The pilot emphasizes augmenting clinician workflows rather than replacing professionals, using AI to streamline note-taking and flag diagnostic possibilities while preserving clinician oversight. Project leads say the trials will evaluate accuracy, data governance and patient acceptance across specialties. If validated, the model could reduce outpatient bottlenecks, shorten wait times and extend specialist reach to smaller hospitals, but experts note that rigorous evaluation and regulatory clarity will be essential for scaling.
